What would it be like if you could choose your own family? What freedoms would this bring? Who would take care of whom? One for all and all for one? Or something completely different? A group of children and adults who do not know each other come together around a big table. Family is the topic of the day. The negotiation regarding the principles of this new community begins. A loudspeaker starts off by explaining the rules – but whether the group will follow these or take its own path first has to be decided.
At a location which is something in between a theater and a playground, politics and democratic processes can be tried out, the balances of power can be tipped and the relationship to the unknown elective family can be redesigned with gusto. This intergenerational and interactive performance by pulk fiction sets off with its participants on a search for the meaning of relatives, responsibility, dependency and the living together of children and adults with the goal of defining these together.
pulk fiktion is a performance group based in Cologne that was founded in 2007. A heterogeneous group, or Pulk, of young artists creates productions for children, young people and adults in various constellations. Their work frequently questions the extent to which media influences and shapes our lives, which also provides the group with its aesthetic approach. The group increasingly asks itself the question: what could a shared life with all generations (all nations and cultures) look like? And along with that: what could a contemporary theater for everyone be like?
Konferenz der wesentlichen Dinge has been invited to numerous festivals, including WESTWIND 2015, FAVORITEN 2016, SCHÄXPIR 2017, Starke Stücke, Festival LOOSTIK and KUSS!Marburg. The production was nominated for the 2015 Kölner Kinder- und Jugendtheaterpreis, was included in the 2016 selection for BestOFF Niedersachsen and received the children’s jury prize at the 2016 Hart am Wind festival. pulk fiktion received the 2016 George Tabori Förderpreis.

Twenty people take their seats at a round table. The table, equipped with microphones, a kind of telephone receiver and buttons in various colors, is reminiscent of the table in the film classic Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. And it may well be the intention of the performance makers from pulk fiction to give the participants an “explosive” power.
At any rate, instructions from the creators provide a framework which the participants complete by rules that they decide upon together. Rules which structure the community as a type of possible family for the duration of the game. Everyone has the same rights, everyone must equally subject themselves to them or question them. They celebrate together, together they continue to decide how the interaction amongst them should be. So far, so good.
Konferenz der wesentlichen Dinge is conceived especially for children and adults. And of course there are children and their parents amongst the twenty participants, as well as children and adults who act as their guardians in some way, shape or form. And this is what gives the game and the rules for playing it that have been created together another twist. The further the community immerses itself in the game, the more the pitfalls of “equal rights” and the limits of our “invisible” social norms loom: are young people allowed to explore these limits themselves in this game? Or do older people have to set limits for the younger ones in their function as guardians? And what about the risk that this will disrupt the mutually agreed rules and the equality in the game?
Konferenz der wesentlichen Dinge by pulk fiktion is satisfying because it not only transforms the theater space into a participative and interactive game, but also because it deconstructs the social norms and boundaries of our society piece by piece in a playful manner. It is not only the large questions about democracy that are posed in this performance; it also asks the smaller questions of how to deal with and recognize different foundations of experience and expertise.
